Why is it better to leave kittens in cluttered rooms than in neat, tidy
environments? Why do some cats experience sexual dysfunction? How does
one know if a cat is depressed? Sick? Happy? And just what does purring
really mean, anyway?
These and hundreds of other vital questions are answered in this new,
practical guide for cat owners. In fourteen information-packed chapters, Dr.
H. Ellen Whiteley shows you how to raise healthy and happy cats in your
home. Subjects included are selecting a kitty, communicating, exercise,
grooming, teaching your cat, correcting misbehavior, aggression, stress, disease, sex, parenthood, and aging and death.
Whiteley's first book UNDERSTANDING AND TRAINING YOUR CAT
OR KITTEN (Crown Trade Paperbacks, 1994) was a featured selection of the
Quality Paperback Book Club and is now in its second printing. It has won
numerous awards including:
- Winner of the "Best Instructional Book of 1994," awarded by the Cat
Writers' Association.
- Winner of the "Purina Kitten Care Award of 1994" for outstanding writing
on the topic of caring for kittens.
Praise for UNDERSTANDING AND TRAINING YOUR CAT OR KITTEN
I have read many books on cats, but this one is by far my favorite. Whiteley presents all of the
practical guidelines on how to select and care for a cat, but does so in an enjoyable story-telling
matter. Throughout the book she slips in "pearls" of little known, yet interesting, facts and amusing
anecdotes. This is a 'Must Have in Your Library' kind of book for all cat lovers, including
veterinarians.
- Dr. Laura Pasten, Veterinarian for Morris, the 9-Lives Cat
Whiteley gets to the point, too, on a range of problems and issues in feline behavior ... And she
discusses training your pet, whether or not you believe it will work at the outset, maintaining that
it really is possible to instruct cats in the arts of sitting, stopping, fetching, jumping, and in
shaking hands/paws. They can also, she says, learn to ring the doorbell. (But, wait - is that
really an advantage?) The proof is in trying all of this stuff out; meanwhile, it's amusing.
